What is tallow and why use it on skin?
Tallow is carefully rendered beef fat, traditionally used in soaps, balms and skin care for generations. Its naturally occurring fatty acids, including oleic, palmitic and stearic acids, are also found among the lipids associated with human skin. This makes tallow a useful rich moisturising ingredient that can help leave skin feeling soft and comfortable. We wet-render certified organic grass-fed suet on our farm and blend it with carefully selected oils and beeswax. As with any rich moisturiser, some skin types may find it too heavy, so we recommend starting with a thin application and patch-testing if you're prone to reactions. Honey Myrtle Balm is our best-selling product and the one our customers return for most often.
Does the balm smell like beef?
The balm has its own natural tallow character along with a light Honey Myrtle botanical aroma. Scent preferences vary; it isn't designed to smell like a strongly fragranced commercial cream.
Will it feel greasy or heavy?
It's a rich balm, so a little goes a long way. Warm a tiny amount between your fingers and spread it thinly. Some customers love the light finish, while others prefer to use less or apply it at night.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
Skin experiences vary and even natural ingredients can cause reactions. Patch-test a small amount first. If your skin feels reactive directly after washing, try a very thin application later, once the skin is dry and settled. Stop using it if irritation occurs.
Can it clog pores or cause breakouts?
Everyone's skin is different, especially if you are prone to blocked pores or breakouts. Start with a small patch test and a very thin application rather than assuming any moisturiser will suit everyone.

Where is Tilba Tallow made?
We make our skincare in small batches on our family farm in the Tilba region of the NSW South Coast. Our focus is carefully sourced ingredients, considered processing and straightforward skincare.

How long will one jar last?
For face-only application, approximately 60–90 days is a useful guide, often around 90 days with a thin spread. Face and body use will use the jar faster; your individual use may vary.
Does the balm need refrigeration?
For the nicest whipped texture and easiest application, store your balm around 20–25°C, away from direct sunlight. It may become firmer in cooler conditions and can begin to melt above 35°C. A softer texture can make it easier to spread a thin layer, so there's no need to cool it before use. Refrigeration is not normally needed.
Can I use the balm for a medical skin condition?
Honey Myrtle Balm is a cosmetic moisturiser, not a treatment for eczema, rosacea or other medical conditions. Ask your healthcare professional about products for a diagnosed skin condition.
