What is tallow
Let’s begin with the obvious: tallow skincare is made with rendered animal fat.
For some people, that immediately makes sense. For others, it creates a feeling of hesitation—or even disgust. We understand that. Most of us have grown up in a world where skincare arrives in glossy packaging with little connection to the farms, minerals, factories or chemical processes behind it.
Tallow makes that connection harder to ignore.
We don’t think tallow skincare is for everyone, and we don’t believe everyone needs to be persuaded to use it. But we do think it deserves to be understood honestly.
That means being clear about what tallow skincare is, what it isn’t, where its ingredients come from and why it fits the way we want to live.
What are the skin benefits of tallow
Tallow is rich in natural fatty acids that are so similar to the oils our skin produces that it can be effective at restoring balance to the skin barrier when things are a little disrupted – think dry skin, eczema, or even oily skin.
Our skin is our first defence against outside pollutants from entering our body and disrupting our health. The microbiome is an important part of the natural system our bodies depend on to stay bright and healthy. We believe the most effective skincare comes from diet and lifestyle, giving our bodies everything they need to thrive.
Our skin is also used as a waste disposal outlet for our body – it is our largest organ, and the less work we give in removing toxins and overloading with inflammatory substances, the more it can be in balance and shine with a healthy glow.
Applying tallow to our skin is something our body can recognise, while also supporting the microbiome of our skin’s surface. That’s why it is so effective at balancing and restoring our skin barrier.
Tallow is an emollient, meaning it hydrates the skin with lipids and smoothens the surface. It also helps to create an occlusive barrier that holds in the moisture.
Common tallow skincare misconceptions
Tallow skincare smells like beef!
No, you don’t have to smell like a roast dinner if you use well formulated tallow products.
It’s just fat, not real skincare!
Most tallow skincare products are not just rendered beef fat in a jar.
Tallow skincare usually refers to tallow-based products. In a well formulated product, tallow isn’t the only ingredient with skin benefits. Just like in industrial-scale skincare products, there can be many benefits derived from formulating complimentary ingredients to bolster the benefits and user experience of a tallow-based product.
Our Honey Myrtle Whipped Tallow Balm, for example, is not simply whipped beef fat. Tallow forms its foundation, but it is supported by olive-derived squalane, MCT oil, calendula-infused olive oil, rosehip and pomegranate extracts, vitamin E, beeswax and a small amount of Honey Myrtle essential oil.
Each ingredient has a purpose.
Some affect the texture and spreadability of the balm. Others help create the skin feel, scent or overall experience of using it. Its benefits go beyond hydrating the skin, and our customers continually report loving the scent.
Comparing tallow to conventional skincare
As a farm-based and family-owned business, we turned to tallow-based products because we can see the whole story of the ingredient’s origin and stand behind what it is. That’s not easy to do with most modern cosmetic ingredients.
We respect people’s decisions to avoid animal-derived ingredients, and we always say clearly that our products are not for people who don’t feel comfortable using an animal product.
What’s important for us is that we can see the full story of each ingredient we use and understand what environmental and ecological impact is involved with its production. We are not so comfortable with the use of pesticides, herbicides and heavy use of inputs and fertilisers of industrial production systems, or the potential of associated harm to wildlife and environmental degradation.
Somewhere along the line of every ingredient, no matter how nicely packaged, there was an extraction process for a petroleum or mineral based ingredient, or an agricultural system that it was grown in. For us, the more we can see that the production of an ingredient fits into a natural system instead of a broken synthetic system, the more comfortable we are in standing behind our product.
Until the recent industrial revolution, humans have lived closely to the systems that support us and understood the impacts we have.
Now we live in a world where humans can live totally isolated from the systems that sustain us, and it’s easy to remain blissfully ignorant of the effects those systems might carry.
As producers, we love knowing how each ingredient was made, and that it was produced in a system that respects nature’s own systems.
Regenerative farming
As third generation farmers, our family has been proudly farming regeneratively in Tilba for decades. Our focus as regenerative farmers is on the soil life.
Industrial systems rely on feeding the plants directly with synthetic inputs that the plants are forced to absorb.
Regenerative farming is about supporting the natural systems that plants are a part of. That system includes:
—life below the soil, such as microbes, fungi, earthworms etc. that feed the plants exactly what they need while living off the energy and carbon those plant produce,
—and life above the soil, such as well managed cattle that are grazed in a way that mimics natural herd movement, birds, insects and other fauna, cleaner water and air, more diversity in vegetation.
When all this works together, life becomes more abundant and healthy – and balanced.
Our farm in Tilba isn’t large enough to produce our own tallow for our skincare brand, but we are passionate farmers and care deeply about effective land stewardship.
We source only organic grass-fed Australian tallow from an area that has never been industrially farmed, where the cattle are managed in a system that fits with nature.
Following the story to its end
We believe that living closer to nature means recognising that we are participants in natural systems, not consumers standing outside them.
Everything we use has a story.
An ingredient was grown, raised, mined, manufactured or extracted somewhere. It passed through hands and machines. It consumed energy and resources. It was packaged, transported and eventually brought into our homes.
Nature is not merely a green label, a botanical illustration or a photograph of leaves on a skincare box.
For us, a nature-connected life means following the production story as far as we can: back to the animal, crop, soil and farming method, and forward to the processing, packaging, use and eventual waste.
It does not require us to reject everything modern. Nor does it allow us to assume that everything traditional is automatically better.
It asks us to pay attention.
We want to tell our customers what our products are made from, why we use those ingredients, how the products are made and what they are genuinely like to use. Then people can make decisions that reflect their own bodies, values and way of living.
Feedback and our refund policy
We regularly hear from customers who tell us that our balms and soaps leave their skin feeling soft, comfortable and deeply nourished. Many say they were initially uncertain about the idea or scent of tallow but were surprised by how much they enjoyed using the finished product.
Only a small handful of customers have ever contacted us to say that a product did not suit them and request a refund.
We do not take that as proof that tallow is perfect for everyone. We believe it reflects the fact that the right people are finding our products, and that we try to give them an honest picture of what they are buying before it arrives.
We continue to stand behind our full-refund policy because skincare is personal. A product can be carefully made and loved by many people and still not be right for one particular customer.
Tallow skincare is not a miracle, and it does not need to be.
For us, it is a practical meeting point between traditional knowledge, thoughtful formulation and a way of life that remains connected to the natural systems supporting it.
